Austin McCarl – A Charge at the Richert!
(Bill W) September 16, 2010 – The successes have continued the last two weeks for Austin McCarl. After finishing tenth in the final Knoxville Raceway 410 point standings, he ventured on to Huset’s Speedway for a solid sixth place finish. Last weekend, he competed at the Jerry Richert Memorial at the Cedar Lake Speedway near New Richmond, Wisconsin where he drove from 19th to 12th in the finale. This weekend, he’ll take on the World of Outlaws at the Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa before returning to South Dakota to compete on Sunday at Huset’s.
Austin registered the third best time in qualifications amongst a stout 36-car field at Cedar Lake. “That place is very fun,” he says of the banked 3/8 mile oval. “It’s bigger than Huset’s and it’s wider. One and two were completely different than three and four. One and two had a cushion, and three and four you had to finesse.”
A sixth place run in the heat race sent him to the B, where he finished third and advanced to the rear of the main event. He had fun in his run to twelfth, but knew if he started closer to the front, he had a shot at a podium finish. “Running third in the B hurt us, because the top two got their time spots back,” he says. “I was proud of my guys though. It was fun racing with Brooke Tatnell, who in my opinion is one of the baddest in all the land.”
Austin, who ran tenth on the final night at Knoxville, September 4, looks back on the season and its ups and downs. “We qualified well which helped us in points,” he says of his second season at Knoxville. “We had two nights that cost us where we were running second. That really hurt. It was always funny at the end of every night. When the checkers fell, you knew exactly what you did wrong and wish you could go back and change it. That’s part of being young and learning.”
He is very thankful for his crew. “Working with Steve and Corey every week was great,” says Austin. “We had our ups and downs, but overall, we didn’t tear up a bunch of stuff, and I was very happy. I felt I came a long ways from last year. Hopefully, we can get something put together for next year and be a top five car.”
September 5 at Huset’s saw Austin qualify third and run fifth in the heat. “Every time I go to Huset’s, I learn so much,” he says of the track near Brandon, South Dakota. “Things just happen so much faster there, you learn in a hurry what you can and can’t do. It’s a really fun place, and very eventful. It’s a high speed chess match.”
After dropping back in the field, Austin was able to climb back to sixth after some great racing. “I got a bad start there at the beginning,” he says. “I worked my way back up and raced with Lynton (Jeffrey) for a long time. That was really fun. I felt like we had a top three car, so I was a little mad at myself. Lapped traffic was nuts. I was laughing inside my helmet a lot of times, just amazed at what was happening. I’m looking forward to going back up on Sunday.”
Austin is looking forward to running in Spencer on Friday and Huset’s again on Sunday.
