Austin McCarl – Climbing out of a Hole!

(Bill W) June 1, 2011 – It was another impressive weekend of racing for Austin McCarl and the TMAC Motorsports #17A team over the Memorial Day weekend. After digging out of a hole at Knoxville Raceway, Austin surged in the feature, before finishing fourth at Huset’s on Sunday night. He will carry the same racing schedule this weekend.

Usually near the top of the pack in qualifying, Austin timed in 27th quick in Knoxville’s 32-car field Saturday night. “The track was weird, and I turned the worst lap ever there,” he says. “I dug myself a pretty big hole that it took all night to get out of.”

The recent Southeast Polk High School grad couldn’t transfer through the heat from the back, and ran third in the B main. He lined up 23rd in the main event field. “I tried to make the best out of the poor situation I put myself in,” he says. “The early cautions helped me. They came at times when I needed the field to be bunched back up. The last ones I really didn’t need, because I was rolling.”

He passed twelve cars on his way to an eleventh place finish. “I was working on my dad (Terry) and Ryan Anderson,” says the Altoona, Iowa driver. “I changed my line with them. I really didn’t need the yellows. I feel like we really rebounded well.”

Two nights were planned at Huset’s in South Dakota Sunday and Monday. With the NOSA series in town, passing points were used. Austin took to the small 3/8-mile bullring and drove from seventh to third in the heat. “We were good,” he says. “We had the passing points deal. Drawing bad ended up helping us. It’s a good test to see how fast you are.”

Austin’s father, Terry, is the all-time leading feature winner at Huset’s, and that has led to a shorter learning curve for Austin. “I like Huset’s a lot,” he says. “You have to be up on the wheel every second. It’s a lot different than Knoxville. It’s the complete opposite. You have to react and not think so much.”

Austin posted from the third position in the main event. “I was running third behind Chuck (McGillivray),” he says. “It took me a while to figure out how to get around him. TMAC got me on the restart, and after that, I got by Chuck. We had some reds, and (Mark) Dobmeier must have made some adjustments, because he was able to get by us. He was fast.”

Still, the fourth place finish came amongst some good competition. “Arguably, we got beat by three of the best that were there,” says Austin. “Shane Stewart, Terry McCarl and Mark Dobmeier are three bad-asses.”

Kosama of Altoona

Kosama of Altoona, Iowa is the latest to take advantage of the nightly sponsorship packages with the TMAC Motorsports team. The sponsorship not only covered the VerMeer Racing #55, but also the T-MAC Motorsports #17A driven by Austin McCarl, and the #97 of Carson McCarl last weekend.

It’s not too late to start the current class and join the McCarl family in some exercise. Call 515 689-5900 for more information.
